Holy crap

Posted in General, Nerd, Religion at 6:55 pm by Ben

Sweet baby Jesus and all the orphans… I feel like this should have its own category – something like “OMG!!!1″ or “Brain Just Exploded” – something wot I wrote is in The God Delusion! Being quoted is itself deliriously exciting, but what’s had me flapping my hands and running in small circles is that I was described as “an eloquent blogger”. Coming from a writer like Richard Dawkins, that’s slightly more praise than I’m capable of absorbing. The quote is the last paragraph from here. The book’s available from Amazon for a tenner, but after reading that in Waterstones there was no way I was leaving without a copy, even if it was six quid dearer.

Anyway, without wanting to get all Oscar acceptance speech on you, thanks to melior in the comments for pointing it out to me – I honestly thought it was a wind-up this morning mate, sorry for doubting you – and thanks to Tim for asking me to contribute to Religion is Bullshit in the first place.

*floats away in a happy daze*

Oh, there’s a little more here.

Just found it, on page 134. It’s quite an honour. I think you may have just given me a new ambition.

Incidentally, I got my copy from Amazon today. So if you were really on the ball when the book was announced you might have avoided spending the extra money.

I reckon then I’d have just ended up with two copies – it wouldn’t have arrived before I left this morning, and there’s STILL no way I was leaving Waterstones without it, even if I knew there was a copy waiting at home…

My copy was here when I got up this morning at a leisurely 11 o’clock. My staring at it in quiet admiration nearly led me to miss my bus. Same thing happened with the new Pratchett book, Wintersmith, yesterday. I need to start getting up earlier when I know there’s a new book due in the post.

I’m about half way through The God Delusion at the moment – that’s how i found you :)

    Congrats!

Thanks Jess! Still buzzing about this, I’ve got tickets to go and see him read from The God Delusion next week. I shall report back on just how badly I humiliated myself.

Just like Jess, I read p. 134 and looked you up straight away. Congrats from me too!! Amazing. Looking forward to reading through your archive!

  7. [...] So. One of your heroes has, to your eternal joy, quoted some of your online mutterings in his latest book. You’ve discovered that he’s doing a reading in a city a short train ride away, and procured tickets. You intend to get the book signed, and introduce yourself as the quotee. The question is this: how the hell do you do that last bit without embarrassing yourself? Whether we were on the train, wandering round Birmingham hoping to stumble across the Library Theatre, or having a quick peri-peri chicken wrap (plus can of drink only 2.95), the thought of what I was going to say was always bouncing around my skull. Congratulations Ben,

I can only imagine how exciting this must be for you. I linked over here from the Tour Journal thread of the RDF website, so thanks for putting that on there. Never heard of your site ( I’m American), but so far you seem to be a funny, articulate writer, from what I’ve read here. Keep up the good work and you’ve every reason to feel proud !

Thanks Laura! On the day I found out about it I reached a level of excitement matched only by that of Christmas Day 1984 (I got a huge box of second hand Star Wars toys, the single finest present I have ever received). I came out of the book shop with my newly purchased copy, saw a friend from work and made her read the quote – she told me a few days later that at the time she thought I was drunk.

I found your site after RD referred to you as an ‘eloquent blogger’. I think he was right. Good site and interesting reading.

    Thanks Pootatuck, much appreciated!
